About the role

As HELP Environment Coordinator you'll plan and update our environment curriculum, including weekly environmental education classes for children at the REC in Cerrito de la Virgen. You'll deliver the classes and brief and lead a team of supporting volunteers, working under the REC Coordinator and Programme Manager.

You'll also organise the monthly beach clean for our Yo Cuido Mi Playa ("I look after my beach") campaign. We love it when coordinators bring their own ideas: past volunteers have set up composting and a hydroponic garden.

Running the project takes 5–10 hours a week. The rest of your time (15–20 hours) you'll work as a multi-project volunteer, teaching English in local schools and at the library, supporting the other HELP projects and Global Glow, or helping with homework clubs at the REC.

What you'll do
  • Plan and update the HELP Environment curriculum
  • Teach environmental education lessons to the children at the REC
  • Look after and update all HELP Environment materials
  • Take attendance and make sure we hold every child's emergency contact details
  • Write weekly reports and monthly reviews of the project's progress and impact for the REC Coordinator and our Monitoring and Evaluation Officer
  • Organise the monthly Yo Cuido Mi Playa beach clean
  • Join the weekly REC meeting with the other HELP coordinators and the REC Coordinator or Programme Manager
  • Come up with creative new ideas to improve the programme
What we provide
  • Personal pick-up when you arrive, plus a walking tour of Huanchaco
  • A thorough introduction to OCN and how we work
  • Certified training in first aid and child safeguarding
  • 24/7 emergency support
  • Organised activities: barbecues, games nights, the weekly volunteer lunch and more
  • A certificate of completion detailing your role, projects and dates
Skills & experience
  • Practical experience or knowledge in an environmental field
  • Experience of teaching or working with children (desirable)
  • Leadership skills
  • Energy to keep up with active children
  • A flexible, responsible and open-minded personality
Requirements
  • Age 18+ on arrival
  • Spanish: intermediate preferred
  • English: basic or above
  • Time commitment: 2 months
  • A current background check from your home country
  • Want to improve your Spanish? We can arrange classes before you travel (online) or during your stay.
  • Longer stays are preferred, so you can really get to know the community and grow into your role.
  • Students can take this role as an internship, with extra mentoring and all the communication your university needs for a placement year or credit.

Safeguarding comes first

Our projects work with children and other vulnerable people, so every volunteer provides a current background check from their home country and completes our first aid and child safeguarding training.
