Who they are
Colegio Pitágoras
Colegio Pitágoras is one of Huanchaco's biggest schools, teaching pupils at both primary and secondary level.
How we work together
Since the start of 2022, Otra Cosa Network has partnered with the school to support its English programme.
Our volunteers bring extra hands, fresh ideas and plenty of speaking practice into English lessons.
- In-class supportOur volunteers work alongside the school's teachers to support its English programme.
- Speaking practicePupils get to practise with volunteers from around the world, building confidence to use English outside the classroom.
- Playful lessonsWe bring the same play-based methods we use in HELP English, so learning feels like fun.
The need
Schools back in the classroom, and ready to learn
WhereHuanchaco
After two years of online schooling, Peruvian schools returned to in-person classes at the start of 2022. It was the right moment to help schools rebuild.
English is a requirement of the national curriculum, and in a town that welcomes visitors from all over the world it's a skill that opens doors. Extra support in the classroom helps pupils build real confidence in speaking it.
Why English?
More than a school subject
In Huanchaco, English isn't abstract. It's the language of many of the visitors who keep the town's economy going.

Knowing English in a town with a high level of tourism helps young people progress and find their place in the community.

Practising with native and fluent speakers helps pupils lose their fear of speaking.

Our school work complements the classes we run for children at the REC through HELP English.
